When I was a
liberal Democrat, it was the accepted wisdom that Rush Limbaugh was a
hateful, bile-spewing propagandist that lied and distorted the facts to
rile the fascist Republican base. No one in my circle of liberal friends
actually listened to him, and like most of our positions, we simply
repeated what our pundits and elites said. We avoided the debate on
then-President Clinton’s peccadilloes, particularly with Rush’s “Ditto
Heads.”
It is ever so
much easier to insulate yourself from the tedious work of actual
critical analysis and debate. Emotional diatribes and shallow insults
are much more rewarding. You just felt better as a liberal after a good
rant, and shutting down your opponent in an office debate with little “gotcha’s.”
A good give and take discussion was always avoided. True to form, our
national press elites, who, to be honest are really not very bright,
don’t dare actually talk to Mr. Limbaugh, either in interviews or in
debate. They know he would wipe the floor with them, particularly with
his command of the facts and his firm grasp of the nation’s political
history. They would be as jackals before the lion, a lot of bark but
little bite.
Jack Cafferty, the angry
alcoholic on CNN who never met a conservative that he liked, has labeled
Rush Limbaugh "that corpulent Oxycontin aficionado of right-wing talk
radio" during the "Cafferty File" Tuesday last. Referring to the clumsy
first week of the Obama administration and Obama’s nonsensical statement
that “You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,”
Cafferty said this:
"And picking a fight with that corpulent Oxycontin aficionado of
right-wing talk radio, Rush Limbaugh -- well, that mobilizes a bunch
more on the conservative right, and eventually, it will begin to bring
down your approval ratings."
The usual suspects in the
media have said similar things about Mr. Limbaugh. The MSNBC leftist
advocacy journalist Keith Olbermann recently said, "In his inaugural
address, the President essentially tried to create a wedge between those
who are reasonable and those who are not. Of course, he was talking
about the Muslim world. Is it possible in this different context that
he's trying to do the same as he seeks bipartisanship with the
Republicans, sort of, you know, separate, Mullah Limbaugh from the
herd?"
Mullah Limbaugh? I’m sure
that brought titters of laughter from the Obama-ites in the MSM, but it
unfortunately shows just how low the press has fallen and how poorly
served the nation is by their adolescent displays of prejudice and bias.
Then again, how seriously can you take anyone who describes Obama as
“Reagan-esque?”
Where Limbaugh points to
the actual words of his political opponents and examines what they
actually do, the Cafferty and Olberman crowd takes petty pot shots,
seldom delving into the meat of any issue, providing nothing more
substantive than entertainment for the leftist home team. Contrastingly,
Limbaugh strikes to the heart of today’s political issues; he
eviscerates the hypocrites of the left and deftly exposes their deceits
and manipulations. All of which is very frustrating when you are trying
to build a “classless socialist utopia.”
It is accepted wisdom on
the left that Obama and the Democrats will eventually try to marginalize
conservative talk radio. Some comfort themselves that this has already
happened. Regardless, talk radio is in their sights. Good luck with
that. Rush is the solid radio favorite. As for conservative
commentators, if the ratings of Fox News conservatives are any
indication, the nation is true to its conservative roots. Fox makes
Cafferty and Olberman and even Chris Matthews look like amateurs.
The pitiful attempt by the
left to garner a share of the talk radio market ended in insolvency and
charges of embezzlement. The left, for all its moralizing rhetoric, will
find it difficult to marginalize the many millions of Limbaugh listeners
without a fight. That is just what a demoralized and frustrated
conservative movement needs--a good clear right versus wrong fight. I do
so hope the left gives it a try.
If the GOP had listened to
Limbaugh, we likely wouldn’t be in this mess. His analysis has been
startlingly accurate, from his reading of the Republican primary
candidates to his prediction that a McCain ticket would be a disaster.
Rush is a danger to the left because he reads them so well, and he knows
their lying hearts. With Limbaugh, it’s not all about emotion; it’s
about evidence and their record. I hope he has some good bodyguards. The
nation needs him now more than ever. As for the silly Obama sycophants
in the press, I guess Brian Williams; the anchor of NBC Nightly News
said it best in an appearance on the Letterman Show:
“I'd like to say something because, you know, people were in tears on
the air on Inauguration Day. My friend Juan Williams works for Fox News.
It's impossible to watch the clip of Juan without crying yourself. None
of this is about a party. None of us have a party in my line of work. We
all try to call balls and strikes down the center. But we have seen an
extraordinary thing that our country has just done. We have a dazzling
family in the White House. I don't think they take a bad picture.”
Some of us had tears in
our eyes for another reason. We all heard the booing and catcalls sent
President Bush’s way from the Obama camp, and saw the rude gestures, all
pretty much ignored by the networks. It demeaned a good man who has kept
us safe. It insulted the whole nation and it was endorsed by their
silence. No Brian, it’s not about party, it’s about honesty and
integrity, and the press has shown us very clearly that they have little
of both. They do have bushels of emotion, however, and arrogance to
spare, which doesn’t help the citizen or the voter or our democracy one
iota.
So to all of you 'Corpulent Oxycontin Aficionado' fans, it’s time to
stand by our man and spread the word. Rush has a big job ahead of him
and the socialists want his head. If ever there was a place to rally the
conservative movement, it is with the Excellence in Broadcasting
Network, from 11 until 2, Monday through Friday, on your AM dial. |
