Trying to Legitimize the True Lie
Politics/Frank Salvato, Managing Editor
January 27, 2005 - The confirmation hearings for Condoleezza Rice’s nomination to the office of Secretary of State have been cantankerous. Throughout a process that everyone agreed would end with Dr. Rice being confirmed, those among the extreme liberal left in the United States Senate derogated the good doctor as one who had allowed her "respect for the truth” to become "overwhelmed” by loyalty and branded her a liar. Dr. Rice’s confirmation hearings became less about her qualifications and the office of Secretary of State and more about being a vehicle for those disingenuous extremists categorized as anti-war.

The underlying thought that fuels the obstructionism of the anti-war left in the senate – as well as around the world – is that President Bush lied in order to go to war in Iraq. It was the cornerstone of failed presidential candidate John Kerry’s 2004 campaign and it remains on the lips of every "head-in-the-sand” liberal politician who refuses to come to grips with the reality that the American people champion President Bush’s viewpoint. It doesn’t matter that the "lie” scenario makes no sense; it sounds ominous and puts them in opposition to a president they believe served four years illegitimately.

Truth be told, the issue of Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction was not the singular reason stated by President Bush in asking congress for the authority to remove him from power. The President made it abundantly clear on several occasions that there were multiple reasons for removing him.

Hussein violated UN Security Council Resolution 688, which demanded that the Iraqi regime "cease at once the repression of its own people, including the systematic repression of minorities.” In the face of this demand Hussein continued to methodically subject Iraqis to arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, summary execution, torture by beating, burning, electric shock, starvation, mutilation, and rape as reported by the UN’s Commission on Human Rights. The commission continued to describe how wives were tortured in front of their husbands and how mothers were tortured, raped and killed in front of their children.

President Bush purposely stated this violation, these specific atrocities, first in his September 13, 2002 address to the United Nations. (All you bleeding heart liberal extremists out there who use the word atrocity in connection with Abu Ghraib take note of the true meaning of the word through Hussein’s actions). For the liberal partisans in our country, especially those in our government, to routinely gloss over this fact is reprehensible. For the anti-war element to assert that WMD was the only issue addressed in the case for military action in Iraq proves beyond any doubt that they are the ones perpetrating a lie.

Additional reasons specifically given that had nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction include:

▪ Violations of UN Resolutions 686 & 687 demanding that Iraq return all prisoners from Kuwait and other lands (years later people from 9 countries and Kuwait, including one American pilot were still unaccounted for, over 600 people).

▪ Violations of UN Resolutions 687 & 1373 demanding that Iraq renounce all involvement with terrorism, and permit no terrorist organizations to operate in Iraq (in the 90’s Hussein’s government attempted to assassinate not only the Emir of Kuwait but a former President of the United States. They also offered safe haven to al Qaida terrorists – including Abu Musab al-Zarqawi – after the US led invasion of Afghanistan as prompted by the attacks of September 11th).

In addition to these most serious of violations, Saddam Hussein epitomized the definition of a genocidal maniac, allowing him to take his rightful place beside Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin. His acts of genocide against his own people mandated anyone possessing human decency to act.

Add to these clearly stated points the following facts. Hussein admitted he possessed biological weapons while not allowing verification of their destruction. He admitted to having a crash nuclear program, the labs of which were found to be operable at the time of the allied invasion in 2003. Hussein had his military shoot at coalition planes patrolling the "no-fly zones.” UN Weapons Inspectors repeatedly found banned weaponry after Hussein said he did not possess them. Now add in the Oil-for-Food Scandal and one would have to have the intellectual wherewithal of a village idiot with diminished capacity not to see the gathering threat Saddam Hussein posed, not only to the United States, but to the world.

Yet extreme liberal, politically correct, socialistic fascists like Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer and Mark Dayton continue to demonstrate their partisan hatred for President Bush by promoting the lie that the only reason given for war was Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction. WMD may be the only reason they voted for going to war but there were other very serious and compelling rationale cited. For them to not place just as much weight on the whole of the evidence constitutes a dereliction of duty and grounds for their constituents to remove them from office.

As for Barbara Boxer’s pathetic contention that it was Dr, Rice who was on the attack during Boxer’s hostile questioning of her during the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing to confirm Dr. Rice as Secretary of State, a more wretched display of partisanship may never have been exhibited in American politics. Boxer is a politically correct, divisive, partisan disgrace and should be sanctioned, with malice, on the floor of the senate.
