Will We Allow an Overthrow
of our Election Process?

EDITORIAL Frank Salvato
June 3, 2004
With the Madrid bombings and the terrorist interference in the Spanish election process growing smaller in their rearview mirror – and fading from the public’s attention – terrorists, and specifically al Qaeda, have set their sites on the November elections here in the United States. They have every intention of doing whatever is necessary to literally overthrow the election process here in our country. The question is this: Will we allow that to happen?

Since al Qaeda’s declaration of war against the United States they have done everything in their power to lash out against the US; her citizens, and her interests: both here at home and around the globe. They have disrupted, threatened, coerced and attacked. They have used airliners, cars, boats, trains, explosives and biochemical weapons to deliver their aggression. If left unobstructed they will no doubt have some sort of nuclear capability in the near future, if they don’t already. It is for this reason President Bush continually stresses the importance of staying the course and winning the War on Terror.

For those infected with a sitcom attention span, political opportunism or both – as in the cases of Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy – the War on Terror wasn’t created on a ranch in Crawford, Texas. It was conceived, created and implemented in the Middle East and Africa over a decade ago by a group of Islamic fanatics hell-bent on removing Western values and the ideology of democracy and freedom from their vision for the Middle East and further, the world.

Al Qaeda’s vision of a perfect world consists of a totalitarian and oppressive culture controlled by their perverse version of Islamic scripture. Whereas every other religion on the face of the planet preaches to love thy neighbor while living in peace amongst those who may or may not embrace the same religious ideals, the terrorists have chosen to read their scripture through death-colored glasses. Those who do not accept Islam as mandated by these tyrannical heretics are "converted” by way of a dull blade to the neck or a sudden explosion from a variety of sources. For those needing a simpler explanation, it isn’t a trip to Orlando with a "super-value” coupon book for Universal Studios and the Magic Kingdom.

Al Qaeda knows that the best and most sensational way to bring about their fanatical revolution is to strike out like a poison-toting viper at the shining light of freedom and democracy that is the United States. If they can bring about the fall of the "evil Satan” of the West, the "world’s policeman,” the dominoes are sure to fall in succession. Should this scenario play out it would leave their dark and oppressive vision for the world ripe for implementation. A chilling thought to say the least.

This being said, the sad truth is this, if George W. Bush is defeated in November al Qaeda will claim his defeat as a victory. This victory would only serve to further empower al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations around the world. This isn’t a scare tactic but a boatload of common sense as mandated by the not too distant past; mandated by the escalation of terrorism after the defeat of Spain’s former Prime Minister and partner in the War on Terror José María Aznar.

There is no arguing the point. A Kerry victory, no matter how sweet to the Liberal-Left and distasteful to the conservatives in the United States would be ten-times as sweet for al Qaeda and terrorists all over the world. It would be the "nectar of Allah” by proxy. It matters not that the circumstances are unfair to Senator Kerry’s political career. They are what they are. Al Qaeda will claim a substantial victory in their war against freedom and democracy by virtue of their "victory” over the man who not only reacted to the devastation of September 11th but who first initiated a true response to the brand of poison, the terror that al Qaeda and their affiliates have chosen to serve the free world. If they escalated their demonic exploits with the defeat of the prime minister of Spain, what do you think they will do if they defeat the President of the United States?

To think the election this November is solely about George W. Bush and John Kerry, or the political Right versus the Left, to think this election is only about taxes, health care, jobs, education, ideology or even the economy is not only to be narcissistic, it is to be irresponsible. This election is about the prognosis of terrorism with respect to the security and the future of the United States and the free world.

While these circumstances may be viewed as unfair to Senator Kerry and his bid for the White House it must be asked, is it worth empowering terrorism and al Qaeda by electing a man to office simply because of politically motivated hatred? I would pray not. Besides, perhaps this is karmic payback for the "over the top” language Kerry used in disgracing the US soldiers still fighting in Vietnam when he was testifying before Congress. Stranger things in Heaven and earth…
