The Worst Case Scenario:
What If The Liberal-Left Got Its Way?

EDITORIAL Frank Salvato
February 26, 2003

I went to bed last night like most of you, unsure of what will eventually happen with the situation in Iraq, wondering what the anti-American protesters are thinking and what they are going to do next and wary of anything that has to do with the liberal-left and the mainstream news media. It seems people like you and I have a lot on our minds these days. But I laid down my head knowing in my heart that supporting the President was the right thing to do being the modern day patriot that I consider myself to be. But hours later, as I opened my eyes, that sinking feeling of victimization started to set in. It had nothing to do with anything that I had been thinking about but it had everything to do with what I dreamt about. I dreamt that France, Germany and the American liberal-left had gotten what they wanted and Saddam Hussein was allowed to remain in power in Iraq.

The feeling was hard to shake until well into the morning and then I started thinking, what would it really be like if they did get their way?

Well, for starters, the world would be a much more dangerous place than it is today. If Hussein were to stay in power it would not only invalidate the threat of force were it sponsored by the United Nations in response to rogue leaders and their threats of genocide but it would effectively render the entire idea of the United Nations useless. Going the wayside of the League of Nations, the loss of even the idea of a United Nations would leave the world’s less influential countries without a forum to express their concerns and they would effectively be forced to side with one of the stronger nations of the world community. Using the theory of "trickle-up” economics in the geopolitical realm, it would only be a matter of time before a few stronger nations stood poised, with their aligned Third World supporters in tow, on the brick of another cold war between superpowers. This would be coming just a little over a decade since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Another thought that struck me is that if Saddam Hussein is granted a reprieve and is allowed to stay in power it will only go to prove to him that he can manipulate the world community and get away with it. By being less than honest about the weapons that he has, omitting documentation from critical reports and creating moving laboratories for his chemical weapons programs he will have proven to the world that by being persistent with his subversion of the truth he will have outlasted the will of the world community. He will have found a way to continue on his quest to develop and possess weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weaponry, without being found out by the world he intends to unleash them on.

If that weren’t enough, with these actualities in place the people of the United States would have to continue to live under the threat of attack at any time. Our once proud nation that embraced the freedom of wills and ideas would suddenly find itself having to look over its shoulder all the time in fear that people with less than grand intensions would be setting up to slaughter another three-thousand plus innocents on any given day. It would become a way of life. To some extent we are seeing that now but if they had their way it would be much worse. We would essentially become the land of the free as long as we lived within the constraint of fear.

But perhaps the most frightening thing that would come to pass if the liberal-left got their way would be that it would become status quo to give in to those who are in the minority but scream the loudest. We would be teaching our generations to come that it really wouldn’t matter what the facts of any given situation were, what would matter is if it were presented in such an overwhelming fashion that the illusion of majority were portrayed. We would be teaching them that telling the truth and standing up for what is right looses out to organizing a vocal minority and packaging it correctly; that it is all about winning, no matter what the cost, ethically or financially. In essence we would be teaching our future generations that what our Forefathers envisioned and what so many brave men and women fought and died for was simply naïve.

So, while the catalyst for all of these thoughts was simply a dream, the reality of the matter is we are much closer to the nightmare than we ever should be.

We, as Americans, must stand up for what is right. We must stand up and fight for the oppressed that cannot fight for themselves and at this moment in time we are poised to do it for the subjugated people of Iraq. The United States should take its rightful place as a world leader and take whatever action is necessary to right the wrongs in the world we are partners in. We should do this no matter what the French and German governments think. We should do this no matter what some spoiled Hollywood brat who hasn’t taken the time to weigh all the possibilities thinks. We should do it because it is the right thing to do. We should do this because we ARE Americans. We should fear nothing that is evil and we should be able to sleep without having nightmares about the future.
