One of Three MoveOn.org
Donors Are Foreign

EDITORIAL Frank Salvato
December 19, 2003
There has been quite a bit of talk recently about the roots of the ultra-liberal MoveOn.org people. While I personally find them to be extremists in the purest of sense, I do defend their right to espouse their opinions. It is when I kept coming across assertions that they were affiliated with the World Socialist Party that my eyebrow raised and I read a bit further. A visit to the World Socialist Party’s website gives you the sense that MoveOn.org is amazingly welcome there…perhaps too much so.

The reason I started to look more closely at MoveOn.org was because of an article from Talon News that had them soliciting money from overseas sources. It seemed very wrong to me that those not directly affiliated with the American political process should have any influence over the outcome of an American election, presidential or not. While co-founder of MoveOn.org Wes Boyd told the Washington Post, "To avoid even the appearance of impropriety, we are not going to take contributions from overseas," it would seem that the wheels of international intrusion on the American political process are turning. To be certain, they will be extremely hard to stop and, quite frankly to detect. This must make the people who champion the globalization of American policy very happy.

Now, we all know that MoveOn.org is active in the political agenda of the Democratic Party. Although they are not officially affiliated with the DNC they are actively anti-Bush, which effectively benefits the Democratic Party. To separate them technically is their legal right, but ethically one would need the "mother of all separation tools” to get them apart. For all practical purposes, and only those with a great deal of audacity, like the supports of the Dean and Clark campaigns, it would have to be agreed that MoveOn.org is a political action group whose sole purpose is to help the Democratic Party, if only for this time around.

I say if only for this time around because there is proof that foreign interests are at work here. It can bee seen in websites dedicated to two of the Democratic presidential candidates, Howard Dean and Wesley Clark. This should really make everyone of us standup and take notice, as we are a legitimate and sovereign nation. The political processes of a legitimate and sovereign nation should never have interfered with by nationals from foreign countries. The definition of the word sovereign, as it pertains to the country affected, is at stake here.

Wesley Clark’s official campaign website actually has a link to an organization that solicits contributions to MoveOn.org titled, "Canada for Clark.” As reported in Talon News, and as found on their website, the "Canada for Clark” sites states, "Non-Americans can't by law, give money to any particular candidate's campaign. But we can support pro-democracy, progressive American organizations like MoveOn.org, which do their best to spread the ugly truth about Bush and publicize the Democratic message." Reports have the number one referrer to this website being the official Wesley Clark for President website. In light of this it is hard not to say that his campaign isn’t soliciting campaign contributions from foreign sources. And without question, this is a foreign group trying to influence the outcome of an American election. The word subversive comes to mind.

Then there is an affiliation between Howard Dean’s campaign and foreign sources. The website Dean04Worldwide.com actively courts foreign nationals to get involved with the American electoral process by affording them information on how to contribute to MoveOn.org in order to support the Dean candidacy and for the purpose of defeating George W. Bush come November 2004. It goes on to state that "because” the Dean campaign cannot accept contributions from foreign nationals that the next best thing is to contribute to MoveOn.org. The instructions go on to tell them how to contribute. The "how” can only be ethically and perhaps legally questioned.

Honestly, the original concept of MoveOn.org isn’t what I take question with. It was created to afford a political voice on a singular issue, the impeachment of Bill Clinton. In that capacity I believe that they served their supporters successfully, and legally as well. But born out of their back patting and celebration in the face of a successful impeachment they have become a behemoth of a hate group, champion to none of the nine Democratic presidential candidates and foe to a singular man, George W. Bush. Further, they have allowed themselves to be manipulated by international organizations the likes of the World Socialist Party and the Communist Party USA. The fact that they affiliate with the WSP in cyberspace is troubling enough. When combined with the fact that in the past they have shared office space with the CPUSA, a revelation exposed during the pre-war and anti-war protests, it should be alarming.

The right to free speech is guaranteed. This is a fact and I will defend that right until the end of my time on this earth. But equally will I defend the sovereignty of this legitimate nation. The acts of MoveOn.org, although hateful and divisive, are covered under the guise of free speech. It is a wart on the otherwise beautiful face of a right afforded us by our Founding Fathers and a right that most separates us from other countries. But the actions of MoveOn.org, their inclusion of voices from foreign nationals into our electoral process, are nothing short of subversion. Quite frankly, it can be argued that their actions come perilously close to an attempt to overthrow the government of the United States.

If ever there were a time to audit and investigate a group this would be a perfect example. If they have nothing to hide then they should have nothing to fear. If they are above board then they should welcome investigation without qualm. But if one member or one contributor should bellow out in protest we can only assume the worst. The United States has served every single one of us well. Living abroad for a stretch of time will only lead to the confirmation of that fact. Perhaps now is the time that we tended to her needs, the needs required for her survival. The alternative is a country ruled by international opinion. God help us all.
