President Obama spoke, on this night of laughter and camaraderie, and was hilarious. His delivery, especially his deadpan, was perfect, and his content was funny, intelligent and comfortable. It was also good spirited. Even when his humor was teasing or satirical, it wasn’t mean, and he had just as much fun at his own expense as he did at the expense of others.
He was great. But then he sat down, and the evening’s host stood up. Larry Wilmore, a late-night television comic. That’s when one of America’s ugly realities went on display. That reality is the tolerance and embrace of anti-white racism.
Calling it that will elicit denunciation and counterbalancing claims of racism, and any number of politically correct anti-white arguments, but it won’t change the sad fact that a half century after the speech, Martin Luther King’s dream has been turned on its head.
We have not rejected judging people by the color of their skin, we have dogmatized it. We have not learned to judge people by the content of their character, we have merely decided to marginalize a different color of skin.
In an earlier day, the social deck was stacked against black people. Increasingly today, it is stacked against white people.
And the politically correct social orthodoxy of our day makes any public observation of that reality grounds for vilification and ostracism. The fear of being called racist has become a whiplash that keeps people silent and compliant.
And so it was that Saturday night the most powerful and presumably intelligent journalists in our land sat silent and sullen as white people were mocked. All through Larry Wilmore’s routine was a theme of white social inferiority. Whites were depicted as old, ignorant, fearful and stupid. The premise and paradigm of his remarks was in large part the mockery of people who are white.
It was a minstrel show for the new age. And the largely white audience sat there and suffered it. The same way that this largely white nation sits there and suffers it.
Our progress to equality has gotten off track. It has stopped being a fight for the minority and turned into a fight against the majority. More specifically, it has soured into an increasingly hostile national theme of antagonism toward whites.
And the PC binding of the American tongue has been its enabling philosophy. Any discussion of this topic, any questioning of motives, anything other than a whole-hearted, enthusiastic embrace of it is denounced in Orwellian fashion as racism. It’s as if the Two Minutes Hate has been ground into a powder and sprinkled across our society as a constant, subliminal theme. We have not only allowed it, we have declared it the superior view. And it has a consequence and purpose. A large portion of American society is being brought into submission to the notion that it is inferior.
We are not redressing the racism of yesterday, we are preparing the racism of tomorrow.
The dogma of political correctness declares that all white people, regardless of their personal choices and character, are perpetrators and benefactors of racism. It says that white privilege and an innately and purposefully racist national culture brand all whites as criminals and oppressors.
As part of that, our national humor increasingly presumes that white people are stupid and culturally inferior. It’s as if the purpose is to brand one segment of society as an out group, as exterior to a developing national consciousness.
That was the tone of Larry Wilmore’s routine. That is a rising theme in America.
And nobody will dare question it, for fear of facing the Salem witch trials of our day – the vicious and instant condemnation of political correctness. Careers and social reputations are one Tweet away from destruction, and so the reporters at the dinner, like many of us across the nation, sit silent and afraid.
Which seems a pretty poor way to live in a nation once dedicated to freedom of conscience and freedom of speech.
We are all brothers. We are all equals. And we must reject any sort of tribalism or racism, no matter who it targets.
Even if it targets whites.
